Why do Catholics believe that God is three Persons, called the Holy Trinity? How can God be three Persons and still be one God?

Catholics believe there is one God consisting of three distinct and equal divine persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - because on numerous occasions God has described Himself thus. The Old Testament gives intimations that there are more than one Person in God. In Genesis 1:26, God says, "Let us make man to our image and likeness."

This may be what Catholics believe, but it is certainly NOT what Jesus or his disciples believed!!

They believed and taught about ONE GOD, the Father, being ONE Person.

Jesus the Messiah as well as every Jew of Biblical times, stood upon the scriptural creed of Deut 6.4ff, the Shema.

This was Jesus' own creed as verified in Mark 12:28ff.

Note the scribe's response:
(Mark 12:32) And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

Obviously then, neither Jesus nor the scribe were trinitarian!

Also, Jesus identified his Father as the only true God!
(John 17:3) And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

On the subject of the trinity,
I recommend this video:
The Human Jesus

Take a couple of hours to watch it; and prayerfully it will aid you to reconsider "The Trinity"

Im not a catholic but to fully to comprehend the trinity is difficult but not to apprehend it. You can only begin to understand what it is "ONLY" if u know the difference between a person and a being. One does not equal the other and the one is a type of the other, You cant compare a class of something with its type. Its like comparing the term "car" to toyota or toothpaste to colgate. God is one Being but is made manifest in three persons. We use the term “person” regarding each member of the Godhead (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), because each of them displays attributes of personhood, i.e., each speaks, is aware of others and himself, possesses a will, has emotions, etc. Hence, the term person.

The father says to the son "thy throne O God is forever a sceptre ...."

John14:26 says 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

Duh the word trinity is not found in the bible so are plenty of other things,,,, But the concept is found right in it the word "trinity" was only coined to attempt to label what was obviously already in the scripture.

Deut 6:4 Has nothing to do with the # of persons in the Godhead because at this time only the Father had been revealed to them it wud be unnecessary... This had to do with Idolatry and the many Gods that were around at that time...
